More effective charities now tax-deductible in Belgium

Belgian donors who want to maximise both their impact and their tax benefits have a new reason to celebrate: thanks to a new collaboration launched by Effectief Geven, it is now possible to donate to additional highly effective charities while receiving a Belgian tax deduction.
Until recently, donors in Belgium faced a trade-off:
- Tax-deductible options often meant supporting local charities, but not always the ones backed by the strongest evidence of impact.
- Most effective charities, identified by independent evaluators like GiveWell and Animal Charity Evaluators, were usually accessible only without tax benefits.
Some charities were already reachable through the Transnational Giving Europe. This allowed donors to give with tax deductibility to a handful of top international organisations such as Against Malaria Foundation, GiveDirectly, and Unlimit Health.
Now, thanks to Effectief Geven’s new setup, the list of effective charities that are tax-deductible in Belgium has expanded significantly.
How it works
Effectief Geven has partnered with two donation platforms:
- With tax deductibility - via the King Baudouin Foundation & High Impact Athletes (HIA):
- When you donate through Effectief Geven, your contribution is routed to the HIA Fund at the King Baudouin Foundation.
- HIA (a global nonprofit connecting athletes to effective giving) manages the fund, ensuring your donation is passed on to the charities or funds you selected on Effectief Geven’s platform.
- Because the King Baudouin Foundation is recognised by the Belgian government, you receive a Belgian tax certificate (fiscal attest) each February for your previous year’s donations.
- A 5% processing fee applies (dropping to 3% once the fund processes €100,000+ per year).
- Without tax deductibility - via Doneer Effectief:
- 100% of your donation goes directly to the selected charities.
- Payments are quick and easy via Bancontact and other providers.
- No fiscal certificate is provided.
To make sure your gift is allocated correctly, each donation gets a unique personal code from Effectief Geven. This code allows them to track the donation as it moves through the King Baudouin Foundation and the HIA fund, right up to the final disbursement to the charities.
Why this matters
- Expanded choice: Belgian donors can now combine evidence-based giving with fiscal advantages, without being limited to the small number of charities available through TGE.
- Transparency: Effectief Geven follows each donation from start to finish, ensuring it arrives exactly where you intended.
- Flexibility: Whether you prefer the simplicity of 100% direct donations or want to optimise with tax benefits, both paths are available.
- Scale: As more donors use the system, processing fees will fall (from 5% to 3%-, meaning more funds end up with the charities.
